Preventing recurrent heart attacks REF RP00052

Applications close: as soon as possible, but no later than  24th of February, 2017

About the project

Despite lifestyle advice and preventative medicines, 1 in 5 people admitted to hospital with a heart attack will have another heart related event within 3 years. Currently, it is hard to identify who is at high risk of experiencing another heart related event. Heart related events such as heart attacks are caused by a build-up of plaque in the walls of arteries in the heart.

This study will use four new methods (scans) to look at plaque in the arteries in never-before-seen detail. Participants will then be followed for 2.5 years to see who has another heart related event.  The scans of people who have had another heart related event will be used to identify which features of plaque are high risk. This will then identify people at high risk of experiencing another heart related event, and will allow better targeting of preventative treatment.
