Pre-school wheeze and asthma development REF NUMBER TK00269

Has your child experienced a recurrent wheeze or been diagnosed with asthma? Researchers at the Telethon Kids Institute are looking for two 'research buddies' to provide input into a new study looking at improving the diagnosis and treatment of asthma in pre-school children. You could be the person we are looking for! No knowledge of research required.

Applications have now closed.

About the project

Half of pre-school aged children will have wheeze symptoms but only 30% of these children will be diagnosed with asthma by school age. This means that sometimes children with severe preschool wheeze are treated with asthma medications when they are not needed. This project will use a new technology to test if it is possible to accurately diagnose whether pre-schoolers with wheeze symptoms have asthma or not, or if they will go on to develop asthma. The study results should also help researchers and doctors to identify which pre-school aged children with wheeze are likely to benefit from asthma treatment.

About the Position

Researchers from Telethon Kids Institute are looking for two consumers/community members to provide ongoing advice as research buddies.

What am I expected to do?

The research buddies will:

  • Provide a “lived- experience” perspective on wheeze and asthma in young children
  • Provide advice on the research plan including strategies for recruiting participants and collecting samples
  • Provide feedback on research documents including project consent forms, information sheets and plain language summaries
  • Help to develop ways to inform the wider community about the research

What skills or experience do I need?

You need to be a parent, guardian or primary carer of a child who has asthma or wheeze symptoms currently or has had wheeze symptoms in the past five years.

What is the time commitment?

The research buddies will attend four meetings over an 18-month period. The first meeting will be held in February or March 2018. Each meeting will be no longer than two hours.

Where will meetings be held?

Telethon Kids Institute, 100 Roberts Road, Subiaco, WA.

What support is offered?

$30 honorarium per hour for meetings attended. Free training is offered by the Consumer and Community Health Research Network.
